They never say, “I don’t look good today” they never say, “I’m not dressed for a picture” they never say, “don’t take my picture or “do I look fat?” They just go with the flow. Now that I think about it, maybe I should only concentrate on Pet Photography.
Take my own dog, Bentley. He is a star for the camera. Of course, he hasn’t had much choice. I’ve had the camera in his face since he was 7 weeks old. He is now 11 months. I’ve found the key to success when taking pictures of you pets, is to allow them time to get used to the camera. Let your pet see the camera, or better yet, sniff the camera. They relate best when their nose is involved.
Another trick to successful pet photography is to let your pet see the equipment being used often and with others in the household, or with your friends. Never underestimate what your pet keeps his eyes on. If they see your camera and other photography equipment being used a lot, they don’t get skittish when you whip it out on them.
Yes, treats help. In fact, treats help everyone involved in the photo shoot, as a matter of fact. If you’re looking to have your pets’ picture taken for a special occasion, you might consider a practice shoot before the actual day. On the day of the shoot, make sure your dog is fed and exercised before getting started. Trying to get a hungry, rambunctious pet to following to your instructions when ALL they care about is food and/or snacks
The bottom line is this; whether you’re doing pet photography for a living or it just having fun. You just can’t go wrong looking into the eyes of your favorite friends.
